Lived in Japan (Okinawa) for two years now, gotta rant

Japanese people have one of the smallest/narrowest world views I have ever come across

I have traveled to Eroupe, India, Nepal, Mexico, Laos, Thailand And I’m American for some background

Their world news on the tv is such a sort blurb and then it’s followed by like an hour usually of a Japanese government official apologizing for something bad he did, sweating profusely and looking like he’s about to samurai sword his guts out.

Many Japanese don’t travel or have never traveled out side of Japan. Yes I know there are many Japanese backpackers that do travel the world but this is a very small percentage of the population and many do not.

The ones who do travel, not just backpack, go to Paris and Honolulu almost exclusively, you’ve heard of the Paris syndrome OMG LMFAO Glorifying Paris all their lives and then someone is rude to them and it’s dirty and dangerous and then they get depressed. Or how they do the same thing with Hawai‘i, glorifying this wonderful place, a picture in their mind really. Really they are unaware of the huge Meth problem and homelessness problem in Hawai‘i and just think it’s this awesome paradise.

When I first started work here, some coworkers asked me if I eat rice. Of course I eat rice the whole fucking world eats rice, do you think that Japanese people are the only people who eat rice? Really?

Katakana is HORRIBLE They are borrowing words from different languages and messing them up, and when you say that word they are borrowing without the katakana -u -o etcetera, they have no fucking clue what you are talking about. Even just missing or mixing up one syllable like Ro for Ru for example while speaking Japanese the whole word/ sentence is out the window and you get this -do not compute- face, they are completely dumbfounded If a foreigner walks up to me and fudges up the grammar and pronunciation of English it is no problem, I can figure out what they are trying to say and give them directions to the pizza place around the corner no matter how bad their accent or grammar is. Not in Japan, if you get one little thing wrong in the sentence it’s a complete derailed conversation.

The men are babies. Immature. Grew up in a social club of only other Japanese dudes

Sometimes I feel like the person in the elevator is having a major cultural experience by just being there with me, judging by the looks and reactions

And what is your culture anyway? When I think Italian culture I think big family dinners and warm feelings

When I think Brazilian culture I think fiery Latin tempers and passionate and steamy love relationships

When I think Japanese culture I think “I’m shy and I overwork”

And what’s with not saying “I love you”? Like you buy all these sugar treats to give because you can’t say I love you

Always saying polite things and bowing but inside are they really different than any other person. No! They can be rude in different ways like passive aggressiveness.

At least they don’t pee all over public restrooms like Chinese people do.

Ok so there are things I like and appreciate about Japanese culture but I didn’t come here to list all of those things, I came here to rant and rage.

Is there anyone who feels the same??!
