Did you know that if you dig deep enough into garfield lore, it is revealed that he is a black, female-to-male transgender human furry, as well as either a reincarnation of god himself, or created in God’s image?

First and perhaps most intriguingly, is his human form. Jim Davis has said in numerous interviews that garfield is so relatable because he is “really a human in a cat suit.” Additionally, February 12th, 1981 edition of the Garfield comic strip depicts Garfield bending over to pick up a peanut, then saying (or rather thinking), “I think I need a bigger cat suit.”

The album Garfield: Am I cool or what? Shows Garfield’s connection to black music, specifically Lou Rawls who’s music represents Garfield throughout the specials, including the never made Garfield’s Judgement Day, where he sings a song from Garfield’s perspective. He is also depicted as black in a BLM post made by Garfield EATS, a Garfield themed food delivery service. Additionally, in the animated version of “Garfield: His Nine Lives¹,” he is seen inventing Jazz music in his fourth life.

While this evidence is admittedly not definitive, there is no evidence that he is white,² so we have to assume that he is black.

In the animated special, “Garfield: Babes and Bullets,” he takes on the persona of detective Sam Spayed. This name is important because it says “spayed” and not “neutered,” meaning his female reproductive organs were removed. This means that he was assigned the female gender at birth, but is clearly male, as no piece of Garfield media refers to him with female pronouns.

At the end of “Garfield: his nine lives” (both the animated special and the comic book), which features Garfield being repeatedly killed and reincarnated in different forms, Garfield and Odie confront God after going through all 9 of their lives.³ They negotiate with God, and manage to convince him that their last life was lost unfairly, then “trick” him by saying that they still had 8 lives left after the one they just earned a do-over on. Then, just before sending them back to earth, God is revealed to have the face of an orange and black tabby cat, and says to garfield, “we have to stick together” implying that he knew perfectly well how many lives were left, and just wanted to help. This can be interpreted in a few ways.

In the beginning, God is shown creating cats, and says that they are his favorite creation, giving them 9 lives for that reason. Perhaps God put special care into creating Garfield as the perfect representation of his favorite creation, and grew attached?

In the end, God’s eyes light up yellow as the screen fades out. In Garfield’s 7th life in the animated short, he is used as a lab test animal designated “19-GB,” and is injected with a mysterious serum that is shown to allow him to shape shift and give him extreme strength. When he transforms, his eyes light up yellow, exactly like God’s do in the end. It’s possible that this serum, once he learned to control it, gave 19-GB the powers of God.⁴

Footnote 1: This is possibly the most important piece of Garfield media, as will be seen later.

Footnote 2: The picture of Garfield without fur is not valid evidence because, as established earlier, that is just his suit.

Footnote 3: Odie has these lives too, despite being a dog.

Footnote 4: It is also worth noting that this is the only Garfield that isn’t shown dying, so it is possible that he gained immortality and was given unlimited time to master his godly abilities.
