One thing that never ceases to amaze me is that there is now an entire generation of hobbyists who are totally incurious about how things work, and so totally helpless when they break. Not just CRT displays but everything else too. You fetishise owning something but are repulsed by the responsibilities it brings.

I think I know why this happened. You all grew up thinking that when something breaks you just toss it out and buy another, or in extremely rare circumstances like a new car, you pay someone to solve it for you. I’m sorry but these things are no longer made, you must learn to be self sufficient, or else you’re only going to have a worse and worse time as things get older and more worn out.

“but I don’t know how to” is not an excuse. you can learn how to. helplessness is a learned attitude, you all had no problem picking up that. You cannot seriously expect to collect 20, 30, 40 year old vintage electronics without needing to understand electronics. That’s the hobby you are in.
