I don’t care what a self-professed fan of ska listens to or wears, it’s all valid in my eyes, but once they get into a territory where they start dismissing the music they’re supposedly a dedicated fan of as not “respectable” or without merit or substance, then that’s when I…well, it’s not so much that I resent them but I resent their parents for not using effective contraception.

Like, I know ska will never fully shed the stigma of being “FUN!” and “WACKY!” and “MOZZARELLA STICKS, ROFL! XD” to white people, and I’m reluctantly accepting of that because I enjoy light-hearted entertainment just as well (I’m even seeing a “wacky” ska band this evening), but once you start wearing this unfortunate cultural status of “non-respectability” like a badge of honor, or moreso leaning into such similarly cringe-worthy mentalities as “ska shouldn’t be taken seriously!” or “you don’t have to be a good musician to play ska!” or “ska shouldn’t be serious, it’s just supposed to be about having fun!”, then that’s far beyond an ironic dig at ska’s unfavorable public perception, it’s an ugly reflection of your own vapid and shallow ignorance.

But, then again, if there’s anything contributing to ska’s less than “respectable” nature among the general public, it’s stupid, condescending memes like this. People may be more eager to point the blame at certain bands over silly internet memes, but I will always respect any musician who puts the time, effort, love and energy into writing and performing any kind of ska music. Never will come the day when I’ll have respect for some emotionally stunted millennial who expects the internet to voraciously caress their privates because they PhotoShopped a hat onto a gremlin.

Or maybe I’m reading too much into it. Ah, that’s probably it. Forget I said anything. Where’s the “delete” button? Is it this big white one that says COMMEN
