some of you are going to be outraged by this statement but before you write comments like “what? how? 1984 is the most depressing book ever” don’t worry, my pseudointellectual friends, i’m about to clear the mud. apologies for any mistakes. english is not my first language and also i’m too lazy to use caps. without further to do, let’s begin.

i’m too smart to read so i decided to watch the movie instead about 2 years ago. i remember being impressed by the quality and absolutely devastated by the story. a lot has happened since then with me and the world in general and yesterday i decided to watch it again with a new mindset and i couldn’t stop laughing. this book is widely considered as a warning against the totalitarianism encouraging us, the general population, to be free thinkers. winston is one of those “free thinkers”. he believes that 2+2=4 i.e. he’s not like the rest who believe everything the governmnent says, forgetting the fact that only yesterday it was the exact opposite. his “love” for julia is an act of silent rebellion.

“op, what’s so funny about that?” you might ask. well, so far there were only some chuckles. peak comedy begins when winston ends up in the ministry of love. it was so funny seeing this “free thinker” be broken by the man. in the end he genuinely didn’t know what 2+2 was. and after visiting room 101 he didn’t love julia that much anymore. he’d rather stop the pain and be a piece of shit instead of dying for his principles. my question to you is “what would you have done if you were winston?” be honest with yourself. most likely you would sell your mother just so that you could live your pathetic life. 1984 is not warning you. it’s mocking you. george orwell was mocking himself. freedom of thought is nothing. resistance is futile. it’s all a joke and all we should do is laugh.
