Nintendo has stayed relevant solely on nostalgia. They continue to sell games on this premise, rarely changing their characters or art style.

Therefore, Smash Bros is the most socially acceptable fighting game, because it was successful when it came out, and because the childlike art style makes it more acceptable as admitting you’re taking part in a nostalgic childhood activity, rather than the true test of skill & strategy that it actually is.

Of course, I personally would not sully my own hands with the filth of a gamecube controller. I only indulge in the highest caliber of fighting games – DoA specifically. Not because of the deluge of waifus, but because it is the most distinguished fighting game franchise of all time. I have never jerked off to DoA.
