My secret music taste is counterculture music in response to ths Cold War and to Vietnam. One of my favorites from this music era is the song “Come Together” by the popular UK boy band The Beatles. The song shows the yearning of the young people in counterculture for a sense of unity in America during a time of great frustration and confusion. Another of my favorites would have to be “For What It’s Worth” written and performed by Stephen Stills. Part of the refrain “Children, what’s that sound?/ Everybody look – what’s going down” refers to American soldiers attempting to defend against the Vietcong’s sneaky war tactics. The use of the word “children” in the refrain refers to the countless number of young, sometimes even eighteen year old, “men” being sent off to war. Common themes and motifs of the songs at these times are the journey to unity and the overarching sense of fear America had as a nation at the time.
