So here’s the long and short: I have autism, so it can often be really hard for me to tell the mood people are trying to convey. As a result, I rarely get it when people are being sarcastic, ironic, etc. Before memes, I was mercilessly mocked for not getting things like this. It eventually got to the point where my parents had to home school me (between 7th and 8th grade). Enter memes. Memes provide an easy and convenient package for communication. Memes make it so people who read them (even people like me!) can understand exactly what was meant without having to worry about confusing/contradictory social cues. Using this context, my therapist was able to help me understand and react appropriately to real-life situations in which people were being ‘condescending wonkas’, ‘derps’, and even helped me deal with my own real-life ‘troll dad’ without having to go ‘fuuuuuuuuuu’. Now I’m a successful, college bound junior well on track to going to a top tier school (for engineering obviously, no arts & crafts for me!), and I can honestly say that memes were literally what got me from my ‘forever alone’ middle school home schooling days to my new ‘like a sir’ self. Since I basically owe my life to memes, I can honestly say that I would give my life to defend them. This sub is literally the shittiest shit i have ever seen with these shit memes i don’t even understand. (leangrymemeface).
