It’s time for some common-sense America, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Southern Africa, Oceania, 1/2 of the Philippines and Japan. The word football comes from two words. “Foot” (the body part where you wear shoes) and “Ball” (the ball that is being used in the sport) implying that the foot makes contact with the ball, hence the name football. Countries like the USA, Canada, South Africa (countries in Southern Africa also), Japan, Philippines(half of them), Australia, New Zealand, and other Oceanian nations, Ireland call this sport “soccer”. Australians, Canadians, and Americans consider their respective football as “real football”. Well in American and Canadian football, the foot only makes contact with the ball during punts and free goals and this is assigned to a few people, unlike association football where all players constantly come in contact with the ball for the entire 90 minutes and American and Canadian football require the use of hand more. While Australian football does require the foot to make contact with the ball more often, the hand is still used in the game. This is why it’s time to enforce common sense and accept the correct name for the world’s favorite sport.
