iFunny was released in 2012 by a Russian developer company the apps purpose is to be a hub for memes from various sources. These sources include Reddit, Twitter, 4Chan, YouTube, and Instagram. The app allows users to make accounts and post memes with the goal to be featured. When one becomes feature the meme they posted gets put onto a tab labeled ‘Featured’. This tab sends notifications to all users of iFunny and users get to like and repost these memes.
While the idea sounds wonderful when put into practice the app leaves a lot to be desired for the meme posters on their app. Before I get into what I dislike about the app I’m going to talk about everything good about the app.
So what’s good about iFunny in 2018?
One thing iFunny has on sites like Twitter and Instagram is its theme. While Sub reddits also have themes ifunny as a whole has on specific theme the community is friendly for the most part memes aren’t too edgy or offensive and the ones that are offensive are funny to everyone so no one is offended. iFunny also is very kind to consumers (those who just look at memes.) iFunny doesn’t require users to make an account to look at memes and they don’t even need to subscribe to or search tags to see memes. Every day you can just check the featured tab and see 20 memes no effort needed. For creators iFunny tracks the amount of days you have been on the app, the amount of people visiting your profile the total amount of likes your page has gotten and It even allows you to connect your Google+ (for some reason also rip Google+) and Twitter. iFunny has a lot of good going for it. Where it falls is due its concept.
iFunnys first major weakness is Collective. The collective is a place where all memes are sent regardless of being featured or not while this doesn’t sound that bad lots of collective is not memes. Lots of posts in collective are anime photos drawings that aren’t meme related cars guns random social media posts sad depressed people looking for attention (not through memes) and other cringe worthy stuff that isn’t funny or relevant. This makes collective a hit or miss section you’ll see maybe one good meme for every 10 random not meme posts in collective. The community has turned iFunny somewhat toxic and started the original meme war in 2016.
“One that would come to be known as The Axxios War. At the time, I was known as Datboi2150. I fought alongside the antis, or IUnion. (I don’t remember the name exactly). In the end no-one won, as Axxios had us all blocked, so it wasn’t worth fighting any longer. Anyways, this led to an increase in cancer as the antis fell, more furries, bronies, etc. were on the app, and since then it has become a shithole”
(Know your meme “ifunny” by Church_of_propane).
The community now seems to (in my experience) have forgotten this war and those who fought on the IUnion have left the platform and went to subreddits like r/dankmemes.
iFunny strengths come from its ecosystem. If its users do not use any other platform to browse memes the user benefits from the following
1. Not seeing memes reposted from sub reddits
2. Ifunny becomes a hub of all social medias memes
3. You can miss out on any of the best memes
These are some great strengths and these are only on the average consumer of memes.
In what is basically 2019 iFunny is wonderful for the meme posters of its platform. For me being able to post any format of meme on a site is huge because the content can become much more diverse if the posters get creative. While I was impressed with how much I actually enjoyed my experience on iFunny the app still isn’t for me. Being someone who is active on reddit twitter and YouTube I see almost every meme before it gets to ifunny. However the app is something I would now recommend to anyone who still for some reason isn’t browsing memes. iFunny is a wonderful place for people to find memes and send them to their friends and I think it will continue to be wonderful for many years to come.
