i hate the fact that people always assume that just because i’m a (beautiful) woman, i can’t possibly be one of the engineers on the project i’m presenting. i was just in a meeting and the councilwoman announced “i want to introduce you all to our engineers at [my workplace], we have Bradley, Paul, and Nathan who are working on this project”
mind you, I (YES, ME) was the ONLY engineer from our firm who was attending this meeting. why didn’t my bosses correct her and say “actually she’s the engineer, we are just admins” ? because he wanted the respect associated with MY title.
i’m just so tired of people completely ignoring my presence because they assume i’m not an equal. i’m tired of people handing me papers and asking me to make copies before asking if i’m their peer or their assistant (i’m their peer, possibly even above them). if an engineering firm comes to your business to give a presentation on the current standing of the design process, there’s a good chance they didn’t bring the receptionist with them just to sit still and look pretty. i’m a fucking engineer.
