In Aardman Animations’ hit film Chicken Run, the protagonist Ginger, a hen, is shown in one scene hanging from a chicken-built and chicken-operated aircraft, holding on to a rope, which in turn is supporting the weight of the antagonist, Mrs. Tweedy. Using an image showing Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy standing side-by-side and assuming that Mr. Tweedy is the height of an average male, we were able to compare their height in pixels to conclude that Mrs. Tweedy is 187 cm tall. Using pixels as well we concluded that the area of one side of her body is 0.8275 m2 – this will be useful later. Using a height to weight comparison chart and assuming “small frame” for the very skinny Mrs. Tweedy, while also adding the weight of her hatchet, we can conclude that the rope is bearing a weight of 76 kilograms. We then assumed that the aircraft weighs roughly the same as a large garden shed, which is essentially what it is. The aircraft therefore weighs 560 kilograms. Using the cruising speed to mass ratio of the Cessna 152 aircraft, which has a similar weight to the chicken plane, we concluded that the shed was travelling at a speed of 64 m/s. Now assuming Mrs. Tweedy has the shape of a long cylinder and using the long cylinder drag coefficient of 0.82, taking air density to be 1.225 kg/m3, and using Mrs. Tweedy’s surface area of 0.8275 m2 from before, we get the constant k, which is multiplied by velocity squared to find the overall force of air resistance on Mrs. Tweedy – this being 1702 newtons. This we divide by gravity to find the additional mass added to Mrs. Tweedy’s weight by air resistance is 173.5 kilograms, meaning the total weight Ginger is carrying is roughly 250 kilograms. If we take the average weight of a sebright chicken to be 620 grams, we find that Ginger is capable of lifting 402.5 kg per kg with one wing, which is the equivalent of an average male lifting 35,820 kilograms with one arm. The average adult male can deadlift 70 kg; therefore if Ginger was human, each of her arms would have the strength of 500 men, and she would be able to lift an entire Boeing 727 with both arms. But what makes Ginger truly godlike is the fact that even as she was holding 402.5 kg/kg with one arm, dangling from an airplane going 230 kph, she showed no sign of strain; this was an extremely modest display of her immeasurable power.
