There is a clear difference between a weeb and an anime fan. You can enjoy Japanese culture and not be a weeb. Weebs are the people who take it too far and act in the ways that I previously described. I have a lot of respect for Japan and their people. They have accomplished things that many other countries and cultures can only dream of. For example, no nation of a similar size industrialised as quickly as they did or achieved as much in as short a period. After the Anglican culture, what other is more pervasive throughout the world than Japanese? My issue is with this very vocal minority who appear to worship their culture, believe that Japan is a utopian dreamland and cannot take any criticism of their hobbies. The definition of a weaboo currently isn’t set in stone but most people agree that it describes a person who appears to have denounced their own culture in favour of the Japanese. As you can see, this does not describe everyone who enjoys parts of Japanese culture. It represents a very small group of people but their actions have been so egregious that they have shone a dark light over the various fandoms as a whole. To be honest, I know that I said that I tend to avoid anything Japanese, but that was me a couple years ago. The truth is that, since about Spring last year I started listening to vocaloid music and watching Japanese vTubers, though I don’t particularly enjoy anime. However, because of the weaboos, I feel very embarrassed to admit to anybody that I do as I fear that I will be grouped up with them. For example, when I spoke about it to someone close to me, there was a noticeable aura of disgust as the conversation went on. In the chat of some livestreams, when someone brings up something related to anime they are often told to “get that weeb trash outta here!” Anyways, it is for these reasons that I feel shameful for what I enjoy and why I show disdain towards the Weaboos.
