We used to have a furry who lived across the street and was not mentally handicapped. He just identified as a cat. I’d see him around town with his tail, ears and furry arm bands. One time he was with A LOT of furries, maybe like 40 of them.
But that wasn’t the weird part. The teenage girl 2 doors down took a liking to him. Rather than approach him like a person she put on a tail and ears and would walk back and forth in front of his house (therefore my house) hours a day. She would sometimes meow or put in her headphones and sing loudly. To my knowledge, they never spoke, but he would sit in his yard and watch her walk back and forth. Cats.
