Traditional form of cannibalism (talking about consuming real human) has been strictly forbidden and abominated without any second thoughts, because it would always imply some sort of violence performed on fellow human beings or self to be served at dinner table.

However, thanks to new technology, we might face a new type of cannibalism of human cultured meat. I think this gives us an interesting thinking exercise to see what really is bothering us beyond the superficial reason. Now, violence is not what stops us. There is no violence involved in cultured meat in lab. Then, what’s bothering us or what would bother most people still?

I think they could be two reasons why people might still be disgusted by the idea.

#1 Evolution has programmed us to hate the idea of consuming the same species so that we might have a better chance to survive.

–Plot twist here though. We have evolved to be smart enough to create meat that tastes like human without hurting our own. Should evolution force within our genes stop us from consuming that meat? Having more options won’t hurt any body.

#2Another possible reason would be in the belief that people are made in the image of God. We are sacred creatures and therefore we detest the idea of harming/degrading us to become food.

–This one personally sounds more convincing to me. I’m not sure how to refute the idea.

I would still be curious to hear what other people think on this.
