There are several scenes in this video in which we can see the director’s true intentions; not to make porn, but to represent our society’s, and in particular American society’s, transition towards belief in selective Christianity, and the ludicrous nature of this belief.

Firstly, the wife has a tattoo on the back of her neck. Leviticus 19:28 states “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.” Therefore, the wife clearly breaks Biblical law by having a tattoo. She also attempts to engage in sex with the husband, explicitly not for the purposes of procreation, but for enjoyment. This is the sin of lust. Additionally, she does not go to church, due to the fact that she wants to engage in this sinful act. Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them”, explains the importance of attending church in the Christian faith. By not attending church, she is arguably affronting God.

However, the hypocrisy of this can be seen, simply through the fact that she is forcing her family, and even her guests, to go to church. The husband’s willingness and eagerness to have sex with the guest, combined with his almost childlike reaction to being told they were going to have sex (the phrase “Score!”* comes to mind) and his apathy to being interrupted mid-prayer, suggest that he does not appear to hold the Christian faith, and instead he is pretending to be Christian to please his wife.

It could be said that the wife even feels a slightly Freudian satisfaction by forcing her husband into faith, perhaps she has some sadistic tendencies (which could explain the handcuffs). She could even be a narcissist, and believe that the rules of Christianity do not apply to her but that everyone else should follow them. However, the simplest answer is that there is none; there is no logical basis for this hypocrisy, she simply wants to pick and choose the parts of Christianity that work for her at any given moment, and likely gets a feeling of righteousness and self-satisfaction from doing this.

The wife in this video represents selective Christians as a whole, and the apparent ridiculousness and hypocrisy of the wife’s actions convey the director’s opinions on this ever-growing sect of people within our society. It appears to be completely
illogical and devoid of any common sense.

Emma Hix’s character represents the people that attempt to contradict the selective Christian, being either atheists or non-selective theists. She is the anchor of the film, representing logic and reasoning. The husband is a bystander in a battle between Hix and the wife, where Hix is attempting to show the wife the erroneous nature of her beliefs and the wife is resisting.

The film is a timeless comment on the battle between logic and stubbornness; specifically, selective Christians and atheists/non selective theists. It is a thought provoking meditation on Christianity, and the nature of God. But perhaps most importantly, it manages to reach an audience that normally wouldn’t be exposed to such material, through the medium of pornography.

It is truly an under appreciated masterpiece, comparable to Citizen Kane. A work of absolute genius.
