Nickelback is a good band. They had some bad songs, but so has every band, and most bands don’t even have any hits. Nickelback back had quite a few great songs, for instance How you remind me, far away, and Rockstar. They are not the greatest band of all time, but they certainly do not deserve as much hate as they get. I can understand not liking a band, but slandering them isn’t helping them be better, nor is it making other people like you more, it’s just unconstructive criticism. Everything can be critized, but when do the criticisms against something stop being critical and are just mean? As the supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once said ( in regards to pornography, but that is hardly relevant) I know it when I see it. And when I look at what people say about Nickelback, I don’t see people trying to help out there fellow man, I see a malicious group of individuals dedicating their time to putting down a Canadian rock band which just wanted to play music. And in my opinion, there is no motive more pure than the pursuit of making music because it is your passion. When we look at these famous people we tend to almost dehumanize them, which is evidenced by the huge amount of celebrity “gossip” magazines, which at best are a little pass time in a barbershop, and at worst pure slander directed towards these figures we “idolize” as a society. When we dehumanize the celebrities we tend to be over critical, we act like we have the right to say how they should live their lives, and we are given the false impression that they care about what we think. The reason this is a problem is that we look at Nickelback’s members as members of Nickelback, and not human beings like you and me. They have thoughts, emotions, and hopes just like the rest of us. They were just a group of buddies that wanted to be in a band, not for the money, not for the fame, but in pursuit of the arts. This is clearly evidenced by the fact that in the song Rockstar they say that everyone wants to be famous, and that people would trade their lives to do so. They clearly has some level of resentment for the fame they have received, and why wouldn’t they? People make tons of comments on the band’s music that are out right mean. They constantly say they should break up and stop playing music. It’s a miracle they haven’t yet, with all the negative feedback they get. They know that at they end of the day people will pick on them because everyone else does, but they don’t care. They just want to make music, which is truly beautiful.
