Cats was a legitimately great movie.

I think the actors looked so cool and creepy and it gave the whole movie a haunting surreal feeling, with them having weird human bodies and faces, with the feline appendages. I think it makes you feel exactly as uncomfortable as the original play intended for the audience to feel, but they’re just able to better capture the horrifying look in a movie. If they ended up animating it, and having the actors not look so human, then the final point of the movie with how cats aren’t too different than people, wouldn’t stick as hard.

Once you look past the horrifying visage that is their weird lithe frames, the movie is absolutely beautiful. The music is powerful and fun, with great lyrics. Even some of the background music sounds like cats weirdly meowing and chanting, and that’s just the coolest thing, because yeah these cats are doing a jaunty song and dance number but they’re still cats. Of course it sounds like a bunch of stupid meowing. It’s such a great fun detail that really helps make the movie immersive.

Not only that, every single actor went way harder than they had to, and they all did absolutely phenomenal. I’ve been around cats my whole life and the way these dancers would seamlessly change a classic ballet move into the way cats stretch and yawn was flawless. I could pick out weird stretches, or the way they’d fall and then stretch, pretending they meant to be there, and think of exact times I’ve seen real cats doing that same motion. Everybody in the cast seems like they really studied cats, and their motions and behaviors to really pull off this role, and it was absolutely delightful.

It reminds me of when I was a kid and would imagine what my cats were getting up to when they were roaming around outside, and it’s so whimsical and fun that it’s almost impossible not to enjoy. The characters are fun and cute, all the cats are different looking with unique personalities, and the costumes and makeup were awesome to see. Plus the actual animations for their tails and ears was so natural and fluid, it was nothing short of impressive with how well they made them both move to portray the emotions in the scene.

The movie itself, is not a bad movie. It’s a wonderful adaption to the original play, if not so, with a more coherent plot than it had before, since they gave Victoria (the main cat that you follow) a more tangible storyline and personality. I think it achieved absolutely everything the play wanted, and more, and it’s completely unironically my new favorite movie. If you haven’t seen it, I would still 10/10 recommend just giving it a viewing, because I think if you go into it prepared to just enjoy a musical, it’s a great experience, and the reviews were way too harsh on the film.
