It is an overall failure in every way imaginable. Overall, if it was possible to go lower than 0, I would. It contains many actors that have made themselves a reputation in the acting world, kudos to the filmmakers on that one, but I believe that this movie could have the power to ruin that. Tony Leondis, Eric Siegel, and Mike White directed this, and you would expect better from the three of them. It’s too cute and immature for pre teens, too confusing for little kids, and too “cringey” for teens. Overall, this movie is for nobody and is just a lousy, lazy attempt at getting quick cash by leeching off trends. It actually is quite dark. It suggests that when an app is deleted, it banishes all the adorable characters with funny faces off to a black vortex of doom, from which there is no return. The puns are used much too often, and it seems like they stole some cheap jokes from a joke book and plugged them in without any context, perhaps simply for the sake of extending the movie. When I saw this film in theaters I wanted out 5 minutes in, but I decided to stay for a good story for my friends, and this review. The visual effects. Oh boy. The “phone” itself when they travel in to the phone is simply a 3D model of a smartphone’s home screen, with lines of binary code running in the background. They seemed to put no attempt in to the visual effects. The emoji themselves are simply yellow balls with faces on them. The basic plot of the movie is that the main character, “Meh”, is going to be deleted from the phone. (See where they go when they are deleted.) Meh then goes to “Hi-5”, a talking hand, for help. They see a “hacker” in the Dropbox app, implying that the app is a hacking device and should be deleted. It is overall a failure, would not recommend watching The Emoji Movie.
