Superintendent Chalmers arrives at Principal Seymour Skinner’s house, despite Seymour’s presumably terrible directions. Seymour welcomes Chamlers in, promising him an “unforgettable luncheon.” Chalmers drops the champagne he brought in a tub of ice on the table in the dining room and takes a seat while Seymour goes into the kitchen to check on his roast. Seymour gasps in horror as he sees smoke pouring out of his oven, and looks in to find flames licking his precious roast. But then he has a “delightfully devilish” thought—there is a Crusty Burger across the street that he can see from his window. He sticks a leg out his window, preparing to head across the street to acquire some hamburgers to replace the scorched roast. At that moment, Superintendent Chalmers enters the kitchen, catching him mid-defenestration. Seymour passes it off as a calf stretch. Chalmers inquires about the smoke clearly emanating from Seymour’s oven. Seymour fibs, claiming the smoke is in fact steam, as he is steaming clams for the luncheon. “Mmmm,” Seymour says, patting his stomach, “Steamed clams.” Seymour makes a quick trip to the Crusty Burger. We see him burst through the door into the dining room with a silver platter upon which 4 hamburgers and a bed of french fries lie. Seymour introduces the meal: hamburgers. Confused, Chalmers asks about the steamed clams. Seymour, with the quick wit of a fox, insists that Chalmers misheard him. He had actually said “steams hams,” which is slang in upstate New York for hamburgers. A conversation ensues about the difference between Albany and Utica, then Seymour excuses himself to the kitchen. Upon return he nonchalantly expresses his desire to terminate the luncheon. Chalmers agrees, before loudly expressing his concern for the state of Seymour’s now inferno of a kitchen. Seymour passes it off as Aurora Borealis. Chalmers wants to see, but Seymour rejects him. Outside, Seymour’s mother screams that the house is on fire. Seymour again dismisses this as the Northern Lights. Chalmer’s words as he exits the fiery scene are “You are an odd man, but you steam a good ham.”
